In order to address environmental challenges facing the country and to reduce carbon emission responsible for global warming, the Lagos state government said it has keyed into alternative sources of energy.
The commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Eng. ToafiqTijani said the Lagos state government has been able to do this by means of solar-powered street lights projects, thereby urging residence to use alternative sources of energy.
Speaking at the fourth Alternative Power Exhibition in Lagos, Eng. Tijani said science had provided alternative options for sourcing energy without destroying the environment.
Eng. Tijani who was represented by Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. FouadAnimashaun, said “We have the renewable lanterns, renewable cookers; these are developments that will help reduce hazards to our environment.
“Solar energy is going to be very useful. This is a good time to get one solar product in our houses.”
The SSA said the state government had keyed into alternative sources of energy, which could be seen in its solar-powered street lights project.
He said, “At the moment, the problem we have with solar lighting has been illumination. But at the moment we are solving them.”
Animashaun advised residents to form the habit of switching off electrical appliances to save energy that could be used by others who needed it.
In his keynote address on ‘Government’s Challenges in the Sustainability of Solar Project’, a representative of the Council for Renewable Energy, Mrs. Anita Okuribudo, listed some of the challenges of alternative energy as substandard equipment, inadequate research and development activity and lack of skilled manpower.
