Surveyor General of the Federation, Prof. Peter Nwilo. has said that the science of Hydrography, if well exploited in Nigeria, will generate massive employment opportunities for the Nigerian people.
Speaking at the “2012 World Hydrography Day” celebrations in Lagos, the Professor of Surveying and Geo-informatics said that “Hydrography will provide Nigerians with a lot of jobs.” He was however saddened by the dearth of employed Nigerian hydrographers in the maritime sub-sector of the nation’s economy.
According to the Surveyor General, “Most of the hydrographic works done in Nigeria (especially by oil companies) are done by foreigners. While in actual fact we have in Nigeria, Nigerians who can do these jobs. But because they are not funded they cannot buy equipment. Hydrographic equipment is very expensive.”
“The country must create some special fund to encourage Nigerians to go into it. It is a big business and it will create massive employment opportunities for Nigerians.”
