ILORIN — The Catholic Bishop of Ilorin Diocese, Most Rev. Ayo Maria Atoyebi, has asked the Federal Government to investigate allegations that some retired generals were sponsoring the activities of bombers in the country.
’’They say this or that general sponsors the terrorists’ sect, and the government has not made moves to investigate such allegations,’’ he said and asked the Federal Government to dialogue with the bombers who had engaged the security agencies in a sort of war, particularly in the north where many lives and property had been lost.
Atoyebi who spoke with journalists in Ilorin during an event to mark the 20th year of his installation as Bishop of the diocese, however, noted that “The dialogue may be secret.”
Atoyebi said the government must “develop a large heart in her search for lasting peace,” hence the need to engage the sect members in dialogue.
He said 13 years of democratic rule in the country, had witnessed abuses at the corridors of power, adding that it was only the judiciary could save the country from the problems of corruption which had eaten deep into the fabrics of the society.
“In true democracy, the Minister should be ready to serve, not to be served; and the Governor does not see himself as god. But our youths have left school, no jobs for them. There is no reason why there should not be enough jobs for our youths in this country,” he said.
He then expressed concern that the way Nigerians practice their religion posed a major problem to the security challenges facing the nation. .
“The way we practice religion today poses security problem in the country. If we take holiness serious, we will be able to tackle the problem of bombings in the country. There should be no sacred cows in the society. Everybody should look for the common good of the masses”, he added.
