ENUGU—NATIONAL Association of South-East Students, NASENS, yesterday called on the Federal Government to wade into the on-going face-off between the Vice Chancellor of University of Benin, UNIBEN, and Bursar in the interest of peace and justice in the university community.
National President of the association, Comrade Kingsley Lawrence, who briefed newsmen in Enugu, decried the use of students in the on-going crisis which, he said, was assuming an ethnic dimension threatening security of students and staff from the South East geo-political zone in the institution.
The students urged the Federal Government to also investigate the issue of coffins reported to have been dumped in the residence of the bursar and put up a structure to guarantee security and lives of students and staff of the institution.
He called on government to constitute the Governing Council of the university, pointing out that the absence of a council had worsened the crisis over the appointment of a new bursar.
The NASENS president said: “The governing council of UNIBEN should quickly be constituted without any delay to enable them play their role of determining such grievances as being alleged by the bursar and appoint a bursar for the university.|”
The students suggested further that the Bursar, Mrs. May Nwoye, should be transferred to another federal parastatal on similar status if her security could no longer be guaranteed at UNIBEN.
They warned that students should not be used to perpetrate evil and urged parents to always advise their children against such acts.
Describing the entire scenario playing out at the institution as a shame to academics and university education in particular, the students body called for immediate steps to stop the face-off before it deteriorated further.
