WARRI— Urhobo Nationalists Movement, UNM, in Delta State, has called on the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the killing of the gubernatorial candidate of Citizens Popular Party, CPP, Chief Ogbe Onokpite, by the police in the state.
The group, in a statement by its Assistant Director of Information, Mr. Johnbull Ovuokero, said: “He (Onokpite) was said to have been trailed to several hotels in and around Udu and environs before he was brutally murdered by a detachment of a mobile police squad at Beeland Hotel.
“This is another extra-judicial killing of an innocent citizen as the law has provision for proper procedure for apprehen-sion, prosecution and guilt pronouncement before execution of judgment.
“He was a harmless politician who would have succumbed to arrest, investigation and possible prosecution by the police if lawfully arrested.
“Two other persons were shot before they got Onokpite. The two persons are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals in Warri.
“One of the victims, Mr. Pius, was shot at the back where he was doing his lawful business as a welder. The policemen came in a commando style and opened fire sporadically.
“This incident presents Delta State as a state under siege as police harass, intimidate and kill people at will,” the group added.
