Ajimobi goes tough over delay in teachers’ pay

IBADAN—The Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi has declared that henceforth, all the personnel involved in the preparation of teachers’ salaries should not receive their pay until all teachers in the state are paid.

The governor also directed that a comprehensive list of all the existing schools along with the number of teachers in each of the schools should be forwarded to his office and that the list must be signed by the head of each school.

Sen. Ajimobi, who spoke during another interactive session with teachers and labour leaders over the delay in the payment of teachers’ salaries, assured teachers who have not received their salaries since October that they would be paid before the end of the week.

He said: “We have been paying salaries of civil servants on or before 25th of every month. For teachers, we are going to ensure that we do the same this month; this week, all of them will be paid.

“Those who are involved in the fraud will be sacked; we will remove all of them from the system; we can  not allow some people to be cheating the society.”

he said.

While expressing his determination to getting to the root of the problems associated with teachers’ salaries, he mandated all the finance officers of the Local Government Education Authority and officials of SUBEB and TESCOM not to leave the secretariat until all the problems were resolved.

Responding on behalf of the teachers, the Chairman of the state wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Mr. Toyin Babatunde, expressed the willingness of teachers in the state to support the e-payment system for their salaries.
