OTUNBA Eddie Aderionkun is blazing another trail in the field of entertainment. On November 18th, he is bringing Nigeria’s most progressive business brains together in an attempt to get financiers for the first truly breakthrough international film directed by a Nigerian.
The film is titled “King Ray”. It’s written and would be directed by a Nigerian-American, Ose Oyamendan. Oyamendan is a graduate of the illustrious film program at the University of Southern California. The school is not only the best in the world but has produced more Oscar winners that any other institution, organization or school in the world.
Some of the alumni of the program include George Lucas, Ron Howard, Ron Zemeckis and John Singleton. Others like Steven Spielberg and James Cameron have some affiliation with the program.
The story will feature reputable Hollywood actors performing alongside the cream of the Nigerian film industry. Most of the story is set in in Nigeria and would shoot on location in Nigeria. The producers also hope to use the film as an opportunity to have Hollywood experienced crews working with Nigerian crews and sharing their expertise.
While not giving much away about the film, Otunba Aderinokun revealed that the film is a comedy and is the story of a Nigerian-born superstar coming home for redemption.
“Ose has always been like a son to me. I have always encouraged him to use his education and experience to further our culture and stories on the global scale. When I realized because of the frustrations and difficulties of working in our environment sometimes, he was focusing more on foreign projects, I decided to take the bull by the horn.
“If our brightest and most exposed kids are telling other people’s stories, how would we stay relevant? We, as a people, have stories that are as rich as the Roman and Greek empires. But, the mistake our fathers made was that everything was oral.
“If I can help it, we won’t be several steps behind in this media age. This film is a start. I am hoping more will come and we will successfully bridge that bridge between Hollywood and Nollywood. There is a popular line from the Hollywood movie, “Field of Dreams”. It goes, if you build it, they will come”.
We are building something with this film and the benefits will be tremendous. We will blaze a trail and others will follow. We should be at the stage where we are bringing big, known actors and mixing them with our own. This film will be a start,” says Aderinokun.
The producers of the film hope to start filming early next year. They have promised that the production and everything associated with the film will be unlike anything ever seen on these shore.
