Obasanjo varsity’s students go on rampage

ABEOKUTA— Students of the privately-owned University of Technology, known as The Bells,  went on rampage, holding  their lecturers and other staff hostage for hours.

The University,  which is located in  Ota in Ogun State is owned by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The students were said to have protested over lack of basic amenities on the campus, which according to them,  made their life on the campus difficult.

According to a  source who witnessed the incident, the students were said to have taken  their request to the management demanding urgent action.

A  staff of the University, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the incident to  our correspondent on  phone, described the action of the students as a mere protest over basic needs.

He however  said  that, normalcy returned  to the campus around 3;00pm.

The students, according to the  source,  have given the management an ultimatum for the facilities to be provided.

In a similar development,  pandemonium    broke out  yesterday , at the popular Kuto market as two

factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, engaged themselves in a  free for all fight.

There were  sporadic gun shots, leading to  the people scampering for safety, as the motor park was  deserted  and had   been taken over by armed mobile policemen, who were drafted to the area to  bring the situation under control  the fight.

Meanwhile,  Ogun state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Yussuph  Olaniyonu  has said that  the  state government   would not tolerate hooliganism in the state,  warning the warring factions to eschew violence and  maintain peace in the state.
