Aba (Abia) – The Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA) will stage a University’s Hockey Tournament at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
NUGA’s Technical Committee Chairman, Nick Igbokwe said in a statement released to newsmen in Aba on Saturday that the competition would hold from Oct. 23 to Oct. 27.
The statement said the competition, which was being bankrolled by HOTLINK Communications and the Industrial General Insurance (IGI), would be aimed at ending the drought of sporting competitions in the universities.
It said the competition was also aimed at developing the sport in universities, as well as sensitise the OAU community about NUGA Games to be hosted by the institution in 2012.
It said that 13 universities had indicated interest to participate in the all male competition.
They are the University of Ibadan; University of Benin; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; University of Maiduguri; Federal University of Technology (FUTO), Owerri; Federal University of Technology,Minna; and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Others are Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomosho; Tai Solarin University College of Education, Ijebu-Ode; University of Agriculture, Abeokuta; University of Agriculture, Makurdi; and Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State.
It commended NUGA council for approving the competition.
The champions of the competition would go home with a gold trophy, runners up silver ware, while the 3rd placed team would win a bronze trophy.
The statement added that there would be prizes for highest goal scorer, Most Valuable Player and best behaved team. (NAN)
