One killed as tricycle riders clash in Lagos

BY Evelyn Usman

LAGOS — One person lost his life while several others were injured, weekend, in a renewed fracas between factions of a tricycle union in Orile area of Lagos State.

The incident, which crippled human and vehicular movements, Vanguard learnt, was over ownership of a motor park around Sari-Iganmu area of the state.

One of the factions led by a non-indigene of Lagos State, had reportedly been overseeing events at the park for years, when, last month, another faction invaded the park which led to a bloody clash that left several persons injured

The lingering crisis took a violent dimension Saturday, after some armed thugs invaded the park and unleashed mayhem on anyone at sight. Eye witnesses said that Policemen from Orile Division, who arrived the war zone fired gunshots, in the process of which a stray bullet hit a member of one of the factions, killing him on the spot.

But in a reaction, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Samuel Jinadu, said the deceased was killed in the ensuing fight between the factions.

He said that policemen did not fire any shot, explaining that they were only there to contain the situation and provide security to innocent citizens, who were going about their lawful businesses.

Nine persons, according to him, were arrested and had been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the command in Ikeja.
