Gunmen attack two Plateau communities, kill 4

By Taye Obateru
Jos — Two communities in Plateau State were again attacked by gunmen early yesterday leaving four people dead.

Loton and Kwi villages, both in Riyom Local Government Area, were reported to have been attacked by the gunmen alleged to be Fulani herdsmen at midnight. They tourched houses to scare their victims out of their homes.

Three people were killed at Loton village while one person was killed at Kwi, according to eyewitness accounts.

Members of the Special Task Force, STF, were said to have responded promptly to the distress calls of the villagers, a move which was said to have scared away the attackers who reportedly fled before the arrival of the military men.

It was learnt that an AK 47 rifle with 600 rounds of live ammunition was recovered by the STF men when they combed the area in search of the attackers.

The member representing Riyom Constituency in the state House of Assembly, Mr. Daniel Deni, confirmed the attack to journalists on telephone.

He said men of the STF were still combing the area for possible recovery of more arms or get any trace of the attackers.

The attacks occurred barely 24 hours after a Federal Government’s delegation led by Minister of Interior, Aba Moro, visited to discuss the fresh security challenges in the state with the state government.

At a meeting with state government officials led by the Deputy Governor, Ignatius Longjan and security chiefs under the ministry of interior on Saturday the minister said the Federal Government was concerned about the situation and would take steps to put an end to the spate of killings.
