AWKA – THE former Dean of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Rev Jonathan Onyemelukwe, 81, is dead.
The Bishop of the Niger, Rt. Rev Owen Nwokolo, who announced his demise, yesterday, described the late Archbishop as a consummate servant of God and pastor who positively touched and transformed lives of priests and Christians generally.
The late Archbishop was reputed to have prepared his grave many years ago when he was still serving.
The grave was consecrated then by the late Bishop of Owerri, Archbishop Benjamin Nwankiti, at Onyemelukwe’s chapel in his Nanka, Orumba North Local Government Area country- home.
He was elected Bishop on the Niger in 1975 and retired in 2000. He served as the Archbishop of Province Two and later Dean of the Church of Nigeria.
Onyemelukwe brought innovations to the Church, including the institution of the now popular Knight of St Christopher, which debuted in his Diocese, the Diocese on the Niger. He also initiated many missionary works and helped to found new dioceses and parishes in the Province.
