Akure—AN Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, Amisu Arogunrerin was yesterday shot dead when a gang of armed robbers ambushed a police patrol team along Ekoro Road at Emure-Ile junction in the Owo local government area of Ondo state.
The deceased and others in the patrol vehicle were moving towrads a scene of robbery incident following a distress call by members of the public in Owo town.
But volleys of bullets were rained on them by the robbers who were infuriated that they were “disturbed from carrying out their mission in the area”
It was gathered that the gangsters sensing that information had reached the police thereafter laid ambush for the team of policemen from the ‘B’ division of the Nigeria Police force in Owo Area Command.
The deceased who was the leader of the police team allegedly ran into the hoodlums who opened fire on them at a close range.
Arogunrerin was said to have been shot on his neck and reportedly died on the spot before help could come.
Others were said to have sustained injures and are on admission at an undisclosed hospital in Akure, the state capital.
It was gathered that the deceased who until his untimely death was attached to the Emure Ile police station was popularly called ‘Abioye e’.
When contacted, the Image Maker of the state Police Command, Adeniran Aremu confirmed the incident which he described as sad.
Aremu told Vanguard that investigation has commenced on the matter.
It was gathered from the deceased family that Arogunrerin has been buried in his home town, Auga Akoko.
He is said to have been survived by an aged mother, wife and children.
