Minimum wage: Imo workers back to work

BY CHIDI NKWOPARA

OWERRI – Government offices reopened for business, yesterday, in Imo State, following last minute suspension of the planned industrial action called by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC.

When Vanguard visited some government offices in the Secretariat Complex, Port Harcourt Road, Owerri, workers were seen discharging their official tasks.

A worker, who simply identified himself as Kelechukwu, said “there are some of us who did not hear about the suspension of the warning strike and were subsequently not in the office.”

Another female worker who bluntly refused to disclose her name, wondered why government should be prevaricating over the payment of the minimum wage.

“It is shocking that some governors are still not decided on whether to pay the minimum wage or not. What is N18,000 to their security votes? Labour leaders should have ignored the pleas from government,” the lady fumed.
