African Confederation Cup: Angolan police defeats ASEC 1-0

JOHANNESBURG, (AFP) – African Confederation Cup favourites ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast suffered another blow Sunday when defeated 1-0 by Angolan police team InterClube in Luanda.

ASEC were held at home by Club Africain of Tunisia two weeks ago in a clash of former African champions and are bottom of the Group A table with one point from two outings.

InterClube occupy top spot with four points, but they could be overtaken late Sunday by Club Africain or Kaduna United of Nigeria, who clash in the Tunisian capital.

Moghreb Fes of Morocco held Daring Club Motema Pembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-1 in Kinshasa to raise hopes of a top-two finish in Group B and a semi-finals place in the second-tier African club competition.

The first of four weekend matches produced a shock as Sunshine Stars of Nigeria came from behind to defeat six-time African title holders JS Kabylie of Algeria 2-1 in North Africa.

African debutants Sunshine lead the mini-league with a maximum six points from two outings followed by Moghreb (four) and Motema Pembe (one) while Kabylie are pointless in last position.

ASEC, without an African title since defeating Esperance of Tunisia in the 1999 Super Cup match, fell behind after 28 minutes to a Jose Gomes goal in the Angolan city.

Midway through the second half the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Zahui Okou was shown a red card after being cautioned a second time in a bad-tempered match.

Moghreb prepared for the long journey to Central Africa by defeating Casablanca clubs Raja 2-0 and Wydad 1-0 as they seek to emulate Rabat duo FAR and FUS and bring the Confederation Cup to Morocco a third time since its 2004 launch.

But the visitors soon found themselves pegged back into their half and 1994 African Cup Winners Cup title holders Motema Pembe ended a 661-minute goal drought in all competitions when Tusilu Bazola scored during the opening half.

Fes, who had lost the last two of four away African ties this year, fought back to equalise on 70 minutes through Mehdi el-Bassil and Abdelhadi Halhoul wasted late chances to grab all three points.

Morocco launched a three-prong assault on the Confederation Cup this year but FUS fell to Primeiro Agosto of Angola in the final qualifying round and Difaa al-Jadida were well beaten by InterClube in a play-off.
