BENIN— THE Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Area Development Commission, EDSOPADEC, Wednesday , provided relief materials to seven communities, where oil spill occurred in Ikpoba Okhai Local Government Area of Edo State.
It will be recalled that the spill occurred last month, following a bust pipeline belonging to the Nigeria National Petroleum Company, NNPC, which affected the coastal oil communities in the council. The affected communities are, Ologbo, Abiala 1 & 2, Adoki, Adjatoti, Ademimoha, Ikara and Kolo Kolo.
The chairman of the EDSOPADEC, Mr Vincent Uwadia, who gave out the relief materials, which includes bags of rice, bottled and sachet water, beans, sea foods, tomatoes, grand nut oil and other items, said the gesture became necessary due to the suffering being experienced by the people of the areas after the spill.
He lamented that after the spill, “the fishes and farm produce have all perished. The situation even became worse because the water in the area is no longer drinkable. We have contacted NNPC and we are happy that they had fixed the burst pipe, but we had informed them of the need to cushion the effects of the spill so that our people can live a normal life.”
We are aware that the spill may not be able to clear for some time but we must try all we could to ensure that our people are made comfortable”.
Responding on behalf of the communities, Mr Charles Geofrey commended the commission for their kind gesture and assured that the relief materials are equitably distributed.
