Calabar – Following the spate of bomb blasts allegedly perpetrated by a religious sect in the North, known as Boko Haram, the Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, has assured Nigerians that the Nigerian Army was equal to the task of security challenges in the country.
The COAS who gave the assurance while addressing officers and men of the 13 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Calabar, Cross River State, said that the country had witnessed a number of security challenges in recent times and that the Army, alongside other security agencies, was ready to confront those security problems.
He said, “Let me say that the nation has witnessed a number of security challenges. As I said when I was appointed Chief of Army Staff, I promised to transform Nigerian Army into a force able to meet contemporary challenges.
“I knew from the beginning that the problems confronting Nigeria were more of internal security than external aggression from neighbouring countries and this is the focus of training and preparations we have packaged.
“I want to assure you and all Nigerians that the armed forces, along with other security agencies are equal to the task and that is the focus of our training now. Part of my mission here is to discuss all these with my officers and commanders and appraise what they have been doing. We are working out solutions,” he said.
Lt. Gen. Ihejirika advised the officers and men of the brigade to work hard to improve on their present state of alertness and security awareness, so that they will not be caught unawares by some miscreants who may attack innocent citizens.
