The Executive Chairman of Ojo Local Government, Lagos State, Prince Durosinmi Adeyinka has commended Loral International Schools, Lagos for investing in sports development.
Adeyinka who was speaking during the Annual Inter-House Sports competition organised for students of Festac and Igbesa campuses of the school said, there was need for students to exercise their mind and body as it would make them complete and healthy individuals.
He said sporting activities were part of education and learning and should be encouraged among students, adding that inter-house sports was one of the ways of discovering and harnessing children’s potentials.
The LG boss however, commended the management of the school for positive impacts they were making on the lives of their students and urged the pupils to continue to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship and to always engaged in healthy competitions.
Earlier in her address, the Public Relations Officer of the school and Headmistress, Loral Nursery School, Mrs Lawrencia Etoh, said academic excellence was not the only parameter for measuring success in life as many have made it to the top through sporting activities.She said because of the importance of sports to the welbeing of students, it was made mandatory for every school to organise sports competition every academic session which Loral has strictly adhered to.
Igbesa, Mrs Uzuegbunam, advised parents not to discourage their children from participating in sporting activities organised in schools. She said sports activities, apart from boosting good health, also de-emphasise social vices in children by offering them the physical outlet to discharge their inner troubles, accumulated grievances and other negative feelings.
Uzuegbunam disclosed that there were convincing reports from researchers which suggested that incidences of juvenile delinquencies could be reduced through school sports, and faulted some parents who see sports as an unpleasant distraction to the overall academic performance of their children in school.
While asking the parents to lend support to the development of young sporting talents, the principal explained that competitive sports was playing a major role in broadening the horizon of young people.
