Umuahia-Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, governorship candidate in Abia State in the just concluded general elections, Prince Paul Ikonne, has called on the Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Azubike Ihejirika, who is an indigene of the state, to resign over what he called the ‘dirty role’ soldiers allegedly played during the elections.

Ikonne alleged that the role of the military during the election showed that “we still have a long way to prove that the military should be above board in partisan politics.”

According to him, the soldiers never showed any sign of neutrality during the elections in Abia State.

Ikonne said soldiers sent to the state in the wake of the high profile insecurity, especially kidnapping, rape and armed robbery, were allegedly used by the government in power to commit a lot of election frauds to the disappointment of the electorate.

Ikonne said: “The role of the soldiers and other security personnel was unfortunate and if they were real soldiers, I call for the immediate resignation of the COAS, Gen. Ihejirika, from that office as the army boss. The soldiers who were supposed to maintain law and order were seen committing electoral fraud.”
