Taskforce seizes 50 metre-long barge of crude

Port Harcourt -The Joint Military Taskforce says it has seized a barge allegedly carrying an unspecified quantity of crude oil in the Niger Delta.

The Spokesman for the taskforce, Lt. Col. Timothy Antigha told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt,yesterday that the task force confiscated the barge on March 1 at Andoni in Rivers.

He said the quantity of the crude in the barge had not been determined by experts.

He said: ‘’ On March 1, our personnel confiscated the barge loaded with a sizeable quantity of crude oil. From investigation, the barge had been loaded and ready to go to the high sea to offload the crude.

‘’ The barge is 50 metres in length, 12 metres in width and 3 metres in dept. It is quite a big barge.

‘’ We also believe that the crude oil in the barge is a stolen one,’’ he said.

Antigha said the taskforce had destroyed wooden boats used by the bunkerers to transport the crude.

‘’ We seized materials like out-board engines, hoses and other implements used to cut pipelines to steal the crude.

‘’ We want to assure the public that we are determined to check activities of persons who sabotage the nation’s economy and will always keep them informed on our activities.’’
