Uyo – The Judicial Commission of Inquiry into child abuse and witchcraft accusations, set up by the Akwa Ibom government, on Thursday in Uyo, invited the UNICEF to appear before it.
The invitation was sequel to the submission by UNICEF of a written memorandum to the panel.
The Chairman of the Commission, Mr Joseph Abraham, confirmed receipt of the memorandum during the panel’s session on Thursday in Uyo.
He said that members of the panel were informed of the memorandum by UNICEF officials on telephone even before it was received.
“Yes we have received the submission made by UNICEF and we want to invite them to come forward to adopt the memorandum and provide further information to the commission.
“They should appear before the commission on March 15, 2011,” Abraham stated.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt the memorandum contains the report of a study commissioned by UNICEF on the child-witch syndrome in Akwa Ibom in 2008.
The panel, sworn in by Akwa Ibom Gov. Godswill Akpabio, on Nov. 22, commenced sitting in January.
The panel was charged to recommend appropriate actions to be taken to protect children from being branded as witches and wizards in the state.
