The commendation, which was made by the Sports People for Jonathan against the backdrop of the commencement of rehabilitation work on the swimming pool of the National Stadium, Lagos said the effort would provide the enabling environment for the effective training and performance of the nation’s sportsmen and women.

In a statement by the national coordinator of the group, Fred Edoreh, it noted that “the Olympic size swimming pool had been abandoned for over 20 years by successive government denying swimmers the opportunity of a standard training and competition facility.

The dilapidation and decay, according to the group, had been a national embarrassment. “It is therefore very satisfying to see that the government has come on to revive it in partnership with the private sector in line with its promise made when the sports minister came on inspection of the facility.

“This development is encouraging and gives great assurance on a positive future for Nigeria sports under President Goodluck Jonathan as he has continued to demonstrate the will and capacity to for the development of sports and the well being of sportsmen. “

The group also commended the government and the NFF for bringing back the Super Eagles to Lagos after many years. “The fans are happy about this and they are looking forward to many such games.”

The group is composed of notable sports men and women, ex internationals, current performing athletes in various sports, top clubs and grassroots men and women football coaches, supporters clubs, journalists and sports administrators and managers.
