The Commandant of Command Day Secondary School-CDSS, Ojo Lagos, Lt.Col UN Babangida, has identified untapped athletic talents in Nigerian youths as the major obstacle preventing them from attaining to the peak of the career.
The Commandant made the observation on Tuesday during the 20th Inter-House Sports Competition of the school, held at the school premises.
Lt. CoL. Babangida said previews editions of the competition and other sporting activities the school took part in which it has continuously showcased outstanding outings, indicated that lots of talents are lying untapped in the youths.
According to him, enough grounds needed to be covered in the field of sports to prepare the future generation on the part of growth that would throw them up as global celebrities.
“Permit me to say that enough ground has not been covered. This is to say that there are still areas that need to be cultivated in the field of sports. The peak in sports in these young generations can not be over emphasized. Let us help them by having what I call Sports Recharge”. This will go a long way to boost their morale, intellect, hope and aspiration.
“WE are all here to see the future Okocha’s, Samson Siasia, Mary Onyeali, Samuel Peters and other sports men and women that have made their marks.”
He expressed satisfaction on the previous performance of his school and charged parents and teachers to take talent haunt in their children serious, as it through encouragement that some of them would showcase the stuff they are made off and grow to become celebrities..
“I want to draw your attention on the performance of my school during the 9th Biennial Inter-Command Secondary Schools and Nigerian Military School Games, Enugu, 2010. The athletics selected from CDSS Ojo surpassed our expectation, aside their superlative performance in academics. It shows that enough grounds needed to be harnessed to discover the hidden talents in them. I think that by organizing activities like this, more and more hidden talents will be uncovered ”, he said.
He then urged parents and guardians to help children uncover these untapped areas of their lives.
“The peak in sports in these young generations are not yet uncovered and if the time to do it is now, to groom in those areas, since some of them would not end in Universities and businesses.,” he stressed.
Col. Babangida also used the medium to appeal to well spirited Nigerians to support sports development in the school through the donation of sporting facilities and equipments.
In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Mr. M Idris commended the management of the school for its commitment to excellence and sports development in the school.
While challenging Nigerians to invest more in sports development, the Chairman promised to support the school with donation of some sporting facilities and equipments.
He also urged other lovers of sports to join hands in the development of sports in the country.
Highlight of the occasion was inter-house competition among different houses in the school, in which golds, Silver and bronze prizes were won by those who participated in the contest.
