ABUJA—THE Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that residents of the recently displaced Ijaw community of Ayakoromo in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State return to their homes after they were recently forced to flee, following the activities of the Joint Military Task Force, JTF, and militants in the area.

National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, in a statement  by its Head Press and Public Relations, Mr Yushau Shuaib, urged  the affected community to remain calm as the Federal Government would assist them.

It will be recalled that the people of Ijaw community of Ayakoromo in Burutu council of Delta State as a result of the operations of the JTF in the area.

According to the statement, “in the pursuit of this commitment, approved relief materials have been delivered by NEMA to the displaced persons in the various camps where they are now taking temporary shelters in Warri and Ogbe-Ijaw.”

Director General of NEMA Alhaji Muhammad Sani Sidi who handed over the items to the people said it was based on the initial rapid assessment carried out by the agency to meet their immediate needs.

He noted that a detail report on their condition and needs would be submitted to the government, while assuring that further assistance may be given to resettle them back to normal life.

“Everything possible would be done by the agency to carry out directives of President Goodluck Jonathan to give necessary succour to the displaced persons. He urged the people to remain calm and be patient while efforts are made to assist them.”

The agency therefore urged the Delta state government and affected local government areas to collaborate with NEMA to assist the people.

Spokesperson of the community Chief Anthony Bamuza commended the federal government for the much needed assistance to the people.

He said since the people had fled without money or any of their belonging, government should speed up whatever assistance for them to return home sooner than later.

The assisted materials included bags of rice and beans as well as mattresses and vegetable oils among others.
