NULGE dissolves exco over crisis

By Enyim Enyim
ONITSHA—Tired of the protracted crisis in the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, its national executive council, NEC, has dissolved the Kingsley Ogba-led national executive.

The council also set up a 7- man caretaker committee to conduct a fresh election within three months.
Members of the committee are comrade Basir A. O, Eze Idima, Bulama Fantami, Felix Udo, Sa’idu Aliyu Kala, Suleiman Adamu Kiyawa and Terengwa Ibe while Goewam Adamu Muhammed serves as secretary.

A copy of the statement from the national secretariat of the union signed by the Deputy General Secretary, Bamidele O Oyeniyan, made available to the Vanguard after a meeting of the union in Kaduna, stated that Kingsley Ogba’s national executive council was dissolved because of the cancellation of the election that brought him to office.

“ I have been directed to inform you the national executive council of the union at its emegerncy meeting held on October 28, 2010 at the NULGE secretariat, Kaduna among others dissolved the former caretaker committee and cancelled the election held in Calabar that brought in Comrade Kingsley Ogba and other national officers to move the union forward,” NULGE stated.

Speaking on the issue, president of the union in Anambra State, Mr Jerry Nnubia, and one of the dissolved executive members in charge of the South East zone, Chief Goddy Ibekwe, described the dissolution as a welcome development, that it would reinvigorate NULGE nationwide.

They said the crisis in the union had caused the workers a lot of benefits and denied the union contributions to national issues, such as the scrapping of the local government system and the joint state and local government accounts.

The duo hoped that the new caretaker committee would conduct a free and fair election within three months to enable the union forge ahead.

Ibekwe said though he was one of the dissolved executive, he had to identify with the dissolution of the leadership because the meeting was attended by 2/3 of the NEC in line with the union’s constitution.
