ADAMU: Guilty or not Guilty?

By Tony Ubani
The World’s attention once again shifts to Zurich, Switzerland today for the verdict of the FIFA Ethics Committee which began investigation into corruption allegations against Nigeria’s CAF and FIFA executive member and President of WAFU, Dr Amos Adamu and Tahiti’s Reynald Temarii

The two FIFA executive committee members were provisionally suspended after being accused of offering to sell their votes for the hosting of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to undercover reporters from the Sunday Times newspaper posing as lobbyists for an American consortium.

The duo have maintained their innocence and expressed implicit confidence that they would be exonerated at the end of the investigation. World soccer body, FIFA, announced yesterday that there would be a World Press conference today where the verdict on the two would be made known to the world.

FIFA President, Joseph Sepp Blatter had said of the sordid allegation: “It is a sad day for football because it’s a sad day in life and you cannot always have sunny days. Our society is full of devils and these devils you find in football. We have to fight for fair play, we have to fight for respect and especially we have to fight that people in charge of FIFA behave as they should do and if this is not the case, then we have to intervene”.

Also, Chairman of the Ethics Committee Claudio Sulser vowed: “As a former professional footballer, I am very honoured to chair this committee, and I am certain that we can do something positive if we work together as a team, with a transparent approach and with a clear application of the Code of Ethics in order to protect the integrity of football.”

Nigerians are waiting to know the decision just as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC is also waiting to prosecute Dr Adamu if found guilty or to welcome him with red carpet if declared innocent.
