PORT HARCOURT- CHAIRMAN Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Attahiru Jega has assured that his electoral body would come up with steps to deliver a credible election next year.
Jega who spoke today, in Port Harcourt during the presentation of a report on the 2008 local government council elections in Rivers state by the Rivers state Independent Electoral Commission headed by Professor Nimi Briggs, said his Commission was aware of the challenges of conducting a credible election in the country.
Promising that his electoral body would not fail Nigerians the INEC boss further challenged Nigerians to contribute positively towards a credible election next year by playing their roles. The INEC boss who described credible election as the basis for good governance hailed the decision of the Rivers state electoral body to compile a report on its 2008 local government election, saying his body would learn from their experience.
Continuing, he enjoined Nigerians to ensure they participate actively in all the process of the election next year, particularly during the voters registration exercise. According to him, Nigerians should make good use of the propose registration of voters to ensure they are documented for the election.
His words, “I want to re-affirm the commitment of INEC to doing everything possible, whatever that is required, and we will give it our best to ensure that the 2011 elections are the freest, fairest and most credible in the history of Nigeria.”
Obviously, it is very challenging to achieve this objective and we are not under-estimating the challenges. Infact, the challenges are formidable. We believe that we will give it our best.
“We also know that our best can only be good enough if every Nigerian contributes positively to the process to the success of bringing free, fair and credible elections in our country. We must get it right”, he said.
“We have been doing everything possible to ensure a successful voter’s registration exercise. The basis of a credible election is a credible voters’ register. We have been doing everything possible to ensure that the 2011 elections will have a credible registration exercise.”
“We are making sure that every person has the opportunity to register. That voters’ register will become a good foundation for the election. All stakeholders have to be involved. We all have to register to ensure that we vote and our votes must count”
