Suspected cultists kill IMT student

ENUGU—THE  Police in Enugu yesterday confirmed the death of a final year student of the Institute of Management and Technology, IMT, Enugu who was attacked by persons suspected to be members of a cult group.

The deceased, Mr. Henry Uzuagu of the Department of Insurance, was gunned down right inside the campus of the institution Wednesday afternoon shortly after attending a lecture.

Sources said his assailants laid ambush for him as he was walking with other students towards the main gate and shot him several times. The gunmen took to their heels as pandemonium broke out within the campus.

The students and workers took to their heels on hearing sounds of the gunshot, while some of them were said to have sustained injuries in the process.

The student, who was said to have collapsed immediately, was rushed to Park Lane Hospital by sympathizers but was confirmed dead by doctors on arrival at the hospital.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the incident yesterday, said four suspects had already been apprehended in connection with the death of the student.

He said the incident was “cult related” but quickly added that investigations were on to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the shooting within the campus.

According to the police spokesman, policemen have been deployed to ensure peace within the campus.
