OWERRI—The peace of Umuonyeali-Ugo community, Mbieri, Mbaitoli local government area of Imo State has been badly jolted, following the gruesome murder of an 80-year-old man, Mr. Michael Onwusoronye, a.k.a Okashi, by suspected assassins.
A villager, who spoke on strict grounds of anonymity, told Vanguard that late Onwusoronye had on the ill-fated day gone to inspect the traps he set in the forest but was shot by unknown persons.
Corroborating what the villager said, one of the deceased sons, Mr. Chimechefulam Onwusoronye, told curious reporters that he sighted his father’s motorcycle on his way back from work.
“I called him the usual name I was fond of but there was no response from my father. It was most unusual for my father to act that way and I decided to search for him,” the son recounted with grief.
According to him, he later saw the lifeless body of his father, as flies already swarmed his body. He added that he quickly ran back home to report the ugly incident to his siblings, adding that a close inspection of his late father’s body revealed that he had a deep knife cut on the side of his body.
The deceased’s wife, Mrs Sabina Onwusoronye, recalled how her husband instructed her to remain at their palm wine joint while he went to check the traps he set the previous day.
“Shortly after, some youths came to inform me that my husband wanted me to close shop and return home.
“The message was strange but I obeyed, only to be told what had happened when I got home,” the widow said.
Although the family said the matter had been properly reported to the Divisional Poilce Headquarters, Nwaorieubi, Mbaitoli local council area, the Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Linus Nwaiwu, however said he did not have the brief on the matter.
