Aba: Descent to beastiality

By Dele Sobowa;e
“What does corrupting time not diminish? Our grandparents brought forth feebler heirs; we are further degenerate, and soon will beget progeny more wicked”.

Horace, 65-8 B.C. (VANGUARD BOOK OF QUOTATIONS p.247). Good old Horace was right as usu al; and nowhere in the world to day are his words, carved on stone, over 2000 years ago, more accurate than in Aba, Abia State, where the reversal to barbarism has reached its peak in Nigeria.

Imo and Akwa Ibom, by the way, are giving Abia a run for its money. On Sunday, October 3, 2010, three people, including a knight, were kidnapped right in front of thousands of people at a Catholic church in Owerri, in broad daylight. It won’t be the first time such brazen outlawry will take place in the state; and it might not be the last.

The forces which produced the kidnappers of Abia also nurtured those of Imo. Politicians with outsized ambitions recruited these young men for elections in 2007; discarded them with their guns after getting elected into office. Now the people are paying the price. Again, it was Horace, who told us that “For every folly [and wickedness] of their princes, the [people] feel the lash”.

The text messages reproduced below were received while the 15 kids were still being held. I received 37 messages from Abia state during the drama; two of them were so vivid in their description of the beastiality of the kidnappers, decency does not permit me to publish them.

The real questions are: are these human beings? And do they represent the people of Abia state which must now been rendered a “no-go” area for any investor as well as for Youth Corpers? Read and weep; because they brought tears to my old eyes.

“GSM NUMBER AND NAME WITHELD FOR OBVIOUS REASONS Worthy Presido, plz let d world know dt all d women , bth a year old and 90yr old alike, are endangered species in d demonic evil kdnapns hapnin in Aba, Abia State.

“Presido, you must come to Aba, and see thns for yourself. Rwanda, Dafur and Afghanistan are better off .Just yesterday morning a bus load of students of Abayi international college was kdnapped. I just want to update you on the state of affairs in Aba, Abia State. It is no media hype, the town has been sacked in word and in deed. Fleeing refugees are scattered all over the other Southeast towns. I have a few in my house in Enugu right now. One is a Union Bank Manager and her family.

It is a sad day in a country that is not at war, that armed hoodlums can run without check for so long. Please let Nigerians know what is going on”. Some horrors and atrocities thrust themselves to the top of the national agenda rendering other matters insignificant by comparison.

The outrage in Aba, Abia State is one such events. On it, I received all those urgent and heart-breaking text messages demonstrating how a once prosperous city and state has been thrown back to the dark ages by hoodlums created by politicians, nurtured and protected by them until the monsters became totally uncontrollable –even by their creators. Today it is Aba; will Owerri follow?

You would all recollect the series of articles published on this page entitled “STALWART, CRIMINAL OR MILITANT” in which the point was made that most of today’s militants (incidentally some are now implicated in the October 1, 2010 bomb blast in Abuja) were once recruited by politicians as thugs, but euphemistically called “party stalwarts”.

They were sidelined after the elections and became criminals operating with the weapons given to them by the politicians. As they became more powerful and richer, through criminal activities, they were transformed into “militants” wining and dining with governors, and now, presidents.

The two leaders of rival kidnapping gangs in Abia, were known to the people as untouchables as far back as 1999. They remain so till today. When a Southeast governor, obviously after having too much to drink, recently announced that kidnapping flourished in the Southeast because banks failed and the Stock Market crashed, he provided an excuse for escalated criminality which only a “godfather” could have dreamed of making.

Not surprisingly, his state is the second most unsafe in the zone. If there was one person not surprised by the brazen display of power by the kidnappers of the 15 kids in Aba, it was me. And the reason is not hard to find. Next week you will read excerpts of a letter sent to Abia State after a previous visit to that state in June this year.

The warnings contained in it were ignored, as usual, until calamity struck … P.S. Articles on Articulated vehicles, Flood and Jega will resume next week.
