Lagos State chapter of the African Renaissance Party, ARP, has criticised the government’s handling of compensations to victims of the ongoing expansion of Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
In a statement by its chairman, Mr. Udoka Udeogaranya, the party said the government’s payout was paltry considering the losses of the victims.
He said: “With over 20 to 30 billion Naira that comes into the state coffers monthly, it is political hypocrisy and monumental insensitivity to the plights of property owners along Badagry Expressway for Lagos State Government to dance a macabre dance on the public square with an installment payment of sum of N250,285,560.
“It is a governmental atrocity for Lagos State Government to have paid only N1.4 billion as compensation to 47 property owners from August 19, 2009 till date, well above one year, at a time this government cannot wait for a month to seal up a property over non-payment of inhuman taxes.”
“If this could be the case of property owners with certified documents, one begins to imagine what will become of those without certification and the displaced citizens of the state whose entire economic lives depend on the demolished properties.”
