Gunmen attack Bayelsa commissioner’s residence

YENAGOA — Suspected armed hoodlums, yesterday, launched attack on the Opokuma country home of the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Local Government and Community Development, Mr. Waripamowei Dudafa, in the Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

Though no life was lost during the early morning attack,  property worth millions of naira was destroyed.

It was learnt that some relations of the commissioner were also manhandled by the invaders.

The gunmen reportedly stormed the sleepy community, which could be accessed by water and land in two speedboats and a Hilux van and made for the commissioner’s apartment.

A  gardener, Mr. John Akpuna, and caretaker, Egbunam Bayo, said the gunmen asked to be taken to the commissioner’s apartment after breaking into the nearby houses, forced the doors open and carted away some electronics.

The invaders were said to have vandalised six houses in all and left a message for the commissioner to stay away from election matters, particularly from endorsing any aspirant.

Reacting to the incident, the commissioner urged his relations and supporters to remain calm and not to take the laws into their hands.

Dudafa said he was not contesting for any position in the forthcoming elections in the state and wondered why anybody would want to attack his home and relations.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Eguaveon Emokpai , confirmed the incident.

He said the command had commenced investigation into the matter with a view to unraveling the identities of the invaders and bringing them to book.
