FG to establish cement technology institute

In a bid to optimise cement production capacity, the Federal Government, yesterday, unveiled plans to partner with stakeholders in the cement industry to establish a Cement Technology Institute.

The Minister for Commerce and Industry, Senator Jubril Martins-Kuye, who spoke at a stakeholders forum, in Lagos, yesterday, said “this Institute would serve as a base to make cement adequate and available as a low cost building material for the average Nigerian. We are partnering with relevant stakeholders to see that this Institute becomes a reality”.

The Minister pointed out that the Institute would be a fulcrum for positioning the country as a net exporter of cement with a capacity of meeting the needs of the ECOWAS sub- region and beyond.
Represented by Mr. Lateef Salami, a Director in the Ministry, Senator Kuye, also noted that government was making efforts to attract new investors into the cement sub-sector.

“We urge stakeholders to come and invest in the cement industries and aid the FG to come up with the technological know how and strategies that would help Nigeria to attain self sufficiency in cement production by 2013”, he said.
