Economic activities and vehicular traffic ground to a halt in parts of Imo State for the greater part of last yesterday as Catholics stormed the streets in a peaceful prayer procession against the ills plaguing the South Eastern States.

Vanguard gathered that the prayer activity was in full compliance with the communiqué issued August 12, 2010, by the Catholic Bishops of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, which includes Orlu, Okigwe, Umuahia, Aba, Ahiara and Owerri dioceses.

The faithful, who spotted black attire, commenced procession at 9am, from Villa Mariae Guest House, Wetheral Road and arrived Maria Assumpta Catholic Cathedral at about 12.05pm.

Physically challenged citizens, old men and women, as well as youths of varying ages, took part in the prayer session, while the penitential service commenced at exactly 12.15pm.

Explaining the need for the prayer session, Archbishop Anthony J.V. Obinna, lamented that the forceful kidnapping of innocent citizens for ransom by armed hoodlums is about the most distressing thing facing the citizens today.

He prayed God to “instill in our leaders, who manage public funds to be mindful of the welfare of the people, as well as execute people oriented projects for the good of all”.

Continuing, Obinna fumed that “the state of insecurity in our states and the level of anxiety among our people in the face of various evils were the principla reasons for declaring the Provincial Day of fasting and prayer for divine help”.

He was equally irked that the recent acts of kidnapping in Imo and Abia States only confirmed their directive, adding that another set of election is forthcoming with all its uncertainties.
