Ramadan : IBB asks Muslims to pray for Nigeria’s unity

MINNA— Former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida has enjoined all Muslims in the country to pray for the continuing existence of Nigeria as one indivisible entity, governed by God-fearing and honest leaders who will live by example within the dictates of the law.

A statement signed on behalf of General Babangida by his media spokesman, Prince Kassim Afegbua said “the Holy Month of Ramadan is not only significant to all adherents of the Islamic faith, but also offers useful lessons on how to live a God-fearing life. The fact that we all are sinners in the eyes of the Almighty Allah, further makes this month of purification essential and significant in helping to ask for forgiveness from the all-seeing, omnipotent and omniscient Allah, the creator of heaven and earth.

“This month of Ramadan therefore, offers us an opportunity to reflect on our relationship with the Almighty Allah, mankind and the entire human race. It is a period for sober reflection on our engagements with life and what we indulge in. It is a call to service to humanity, alms giving, generosity, and shared relationship with the fear of Allah as the foundation of our daily interactions, engagements and indulgences. It is expected of every devout Muslim to adhere to the rules of this month of purification.

According to General Babangida, “I have no doubt in my mind that given our continuing relationship with Allah through prayers and the doctrines of the Islamic faith, the nation and her people stand to benefit. We must therefore commit ourselves to doing things that are worthy in the eyes of the Almighty Allah, promote a sense of belonging amongst Nigerians, encourage good neighbourliness, indulge in patriotism and charitable conduct, and above all, be honest and transparent in all that we do. Life is nothing but vanity. We need to draw ourselves closer to Almighty Allah so that we can find favour in Him and be worthy ambassadors here on earth.

“I wish to call on our Muslim brothers and sisters to pray for the continuing existence of Nigeria as one indivisible entity, governed by God-fearing and honest leaders who will live by example within the dictates of the law. Nigerians should pray for leaders who will respect the aspirations of the people, respect the rule of law, obey simple agreements and pursue good governance for the benefit of the people.

“Nigeria will flourish better under such atmosphere of accountability and probity in governance. We must insist on good governance, transparency and diligence. We must continue to preach unity, stability and development. We must give hope to our people in fulfilment of our national objectives.

“As the Ramadan sets in, I wish all our Muslim brothers and sisters a fruitful, rewarding and hitch-free exercise. May the Almighty Allah, in His mercies, grant our supplications and answer our prayers.”
