Osun: LG polls to hold Dec 18

Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSSIEC, has fixed December 18, 2010, for the conduct of fresh election in all the 30 local government councils including Ife Area Council of the state.

This came on the heel of warning by the main opposition party in the state, Action Congress, AC, that it was wrong and contemptuous for the state electoral body to go ahead with the election while the case was still at the Court of Appeal.

The Chairman of OSSIEC, Justice Titus Adewuyi Oyeyemi (rtd), said Thursday that there was no going back on the proposed council poll.

AC, in a statement by Alhaji Lai Muhammed, its National Publicity Secretary,  said it would not partake in any local government election, saying the current elected officers in the 30 councils were operating illegally.

He said the Court of Appeal had declared the last local government election held on December 15, 2007 illegal, adding that the State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola had since then refused to obey the court order by dissolving the councils.

Meanwhile,    Chairmanship candidates of  AC, in Osun State have vowed to boycott the forthcoming local government elections in the state if judgment is not delivered in a suit pending before the Supreme Court.

Addressing newsmen in Lagos, Prince Kunle Ayantoye, who spoke on behalf of the 30 chairmanship candidates, berated the Osun State government for its plan to go ahead with the conduct of the polls irrespective of a pending suit before the Supreme Court.

While reacting to an announcement made by the state government, they alleged that it was a plot aimed at preventing them from participating in the elections.
