By Ben Agande

ABUJA—The    Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Dr Ezekiel Oyemomi has blamed the slow pace of development in the West African sub-region on the availability and easy accessibility to illicit small arms and light weapon and has called on national governments in the region to brace up to the challenge..

In a keynote address yesterday on the proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapon, Oyemomi said the availability of this weapon is the facilitating factor ‘to the worrisome level of criminality and incessant intra-state conflicts in West Africa which have not only resulted in loss of lives and properties but has impeded national development.

“The humanitarian consequences emanating from armed violence, in terms of the issue of refugees and internally displaced persons have continued to increase the burden of governance in the sub-region.”
