Jonathan gets Christian pilgrimage report

 ABUJA—ACTING President Goodluck Jonathan has commended the Federal Government delegation to the 2009 Christian Pilgrimage to Israel and thanked the committee for maintaining a good standard.

Jonathan who said he was impressed that the exercise was without a major scandal, spoke when he received the report of the 2009 Christian Pilgrimage to Jeruslam.

 While appreciating the efforts of the committee, he noted that it was not an easy task to lead people outside the country without experiencing challenges.

 According to him, “People will always want to challenge the law but I commend you for being consistent and maintaining the standard.”

 The Acting President said the Federal Government is looking into the issue of a Bilateral Air Service Agreement between Nigeria and the State of Israel to ease the problem of air travel between both countries.

He urged the committee to explore other relevant Holy sites to enable pilgrims enjoy the full benefits of the programme, saying that he is prepared to inaugurate the 2010 committee as soon as he ascertains their readiness to flag-off the exercise.

Dr Jonathan condoled with families of the two pilgrims who lost their lives in the course of performing the 2009 pilgrimage in the Holy land. He prayed God to receive their souls in His bosom.

Leader of the Federal Government delegation, Hon. Tunde Akogun called on the Federal Government to impress it upon the states to identify with and participate more in subsequent pilgrimages.

He thanked the Acting President for the privilege to serve and attributed the success to team spirit and determination.

He suggested that the exercise should commence not later than July each year to enable the pilgrimage hold between October and November. About 14,000 performed the 2009 Christian pilgrimage.
