Group writes Jonathan on new Poly Rector

By Chidi Nkwopara

OWERRI—Chairman and members of the Governing Council of Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, have been urged to enure that only a fit and proper candidate is appointed to replace the out-going Rector of the institution, Chief Onyekwere I. Nwankwo.

The passionate appeal is contained in an open letter to the Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, signed on behalf of Owerri Zonal Youth Assembly, OZYA, by the Public Relations Officer and Social Mobilizer, Comrades Ifeanyi Onu-Egwunwoke and Jeff Asinobi respectively, and made available to Vanguard in Owerri.

They argued that because former governing council members made sure that only the right men were appointed Rectors of the institution, the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, is today ranked among the top universities and polytechnics in Africa.

OZYA chieftains equally raised alarm that the sound principle of appointing effective hands for the institution is on the verge of being compromised, following an alleged clandestine move to appoint somebody, largely regarded as “educationally ill-equipped.”

“Even an illiterate knows that the best way of destroying the successes recorded by this Polytechnic in these days of federal government’s emphasis on science, engineering and technical education is to appoint a rector whose knowledge is based on commercial school education, typing and shorthand,” the youths fumed.
