Former Super Eagles forward, Etim Esin has said the only way Super Eagles technical adviser, Lars Lagerback can select quality players that will make his final 23-man squad for the World Cup is to have more friendly matches for the team.
Etim, nicknamed Maradona during his playing days believes that at least two friendly matches could give him(Lagerback) the opportunity to select the best players for the competition, adding that the short time left notwithstanding, friendly matches are needed to know the players who are in form for better selection.
“We know the time is very short as the competition is around the corner. That notwithstanding, a proper selection needs to be done. That will give the coach the opportunity to do what he can do as a coach. He needs to know more of the players abilities so that he can pick his best for the competition.
“Nothing should stop them from organising friendly matches before June 11 because it is very vital and important. With the way things are going, our chances can be known after we succeed in the group stage,†Esin said.
Several planned friendlies had fallen through due to one disagreement or the other ranging from venue, appearance fees and the non-availability of key players due to club commitment.
Meanwhile, Eagles are expected to play against North Korea on June 4 in South Africa for the last phase of preparations for the World Cup.
