A multi million Naira hotel building under construction in Auchi, the headquarters of Estako –West local government area of Edo State, collapsed yesterday with no fewer than seventeen construction workers feared dead and buried in the rubble.
The hotel building, behind Uyi House and allegedly said to belong to a Benin-based business man, was said to have collapsed at about 5 a.m. while the workers were asleep.
Six of the survivors who spoke with journalists at the scene of the incident, while expressing gratitude to God for their miraculous escape, disclosed that they were asleep and were woken up by a deafening sound of the falling building.
A tense atmosphere still enveloped the scene of the incident as at press time.
However, men of the Nigeria Police, Auchi Area Zone have been drafted to the scene of the disaster to forestall possible break down of law and order from the emotional crowd who have been trooping in and out of the scene. Efforts to reach the Edo State Police Command spokesman, Mr.Peter Ogboi, for his comment failed as he would not picked his telephone.
Also, attempt made to see the owner of the building in Benin; failed as his staff at his Mission Road Office would not disclose his whereabouts.
