ABUJA—The House of Representatives yesterday passed a motion urging the Government of Nigeria to cut ties with the Republic of Libya over an inciting statement by that Country’s President, Muammar Khaddafi that Nigeria should split along religious lines.

The Libyan leader had on Tuesday, while addressing students in Tripoli, Libya, advised Nigeria to divide along religious lines, with the Christian capital in Lagos and the Muslim Capital in Abuja, as a panacea to the recurring crises in Plateau State and other parts of the country. .

The prayer to sever ties with the Socialist Country came as an amendment from Rep. Emmanuel Jime(PDP/Makurdi/Guma-Benue State), to a substantive motion sponsored by Rep. Halims Agoda(PDP/Ethiope/Delta State).

The House through the motion titled: “Comments by Col. Muammar Gaddafi on the Recurrent Communal Crises in Nigeria”, stated that it was “disturbed by the position of the Libyan Leader on the crises in Nigeria in which he had called for the partitioning of the Country on religious divide”
