FoI bill is alive, says Bankole

Mr Dimeji Bankole, Speaker of the House of Representatives, said on Thursday that the Freedom of Information (FOI) bill is “still alive and not dead”.

Bankole told members of National Executive Council (NEC) of the NUJ, who visited him in Abuja, that the legislature, more than any other body, stood to benefit from its passage.

He dispelled the notion that the  bill was solely for the media, stressing that such notion might  have inadvertently created fears about the bill in some quarters.

“In the House, we are not against the FOI bill, even though it met some opposition. We need to educate more people and allay their fears. A situation where it is sold as journalists’ bill is not acceptable,” he said.

The speaker gave the assurance that the bill would no die but live, adding that “it is a Nigerian bill that will assist the Parliament to do its job.”

He also told the journalists that the House would soon complete work on the Constitution Amendment and the Electoral Reform bills.
