The riot that almost was

But for prayers and the love of God last Sunday, Season 5 of The Future Awards would have been marred by an angry demonstration led by an aggrieved fellow.

Things were going on fairly smoothly, no thanks to the rough transition and gaps that pervaded the function, when the winner for ‘Excellence in Public Service’ category was called: Isa- Modibbo Fatima Zara.

The young 26-year-old female old doctor who works on HIV positive pregnant women across Niger, Kogi, Nassarawa, Kaduna and the FCT had attended the event with her head covered and in company of a few friends, especially a lanky male figure strongly perceived to be her husband.

She was received on stage by Chocolate City label boss; Barr Audu Makori and Mo Hits record label signee; the Prince and the men had tried to give the conventional Western public embrace. First to go was Audu who tried embracing Fatima but had to refrain mid-way when guests shouted a caution. Already her friends, all dressed in native ensemble had risen from their seats.

After receiving her plaque and goody bag, just before leaving the stage, The Prince refused to take cues from the crowd as he tried to have his portion of what turned out to be ‘a partial hug’ while Fatima tried to refrain amidst smiles.

By now, the deed was done. A visibly angry ‘husband’ left his table and moved to the aisle near-by, pacing restlessly and stirring discomfort in nearby guests. He was contained by friends who tried to calm him down, perhaps reminding him it was a public function and that the greetings were well-intentioned. And although Fatima kept the smile as she walked down the hall’s main aisle, it was not a pleasant ‘husband’ who welcomed her with her plaque.
