By Gbenga Olarinoye

OSOGBO—Academic and administrative activities at the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Osun State, were yesterday grounded as workers of the institution barricaded all major roads on the campus.
The workers were said to be protesting against the alleged double deduction of Pension Fund by the management of the university.

Vanguard observed yesterday that vehicular activities were brought to a standstill as visitors and students trekked scores of kilometres before getting to their destinations.

A detachment of policemen from Ile-Ife Police division were drafted to the main gate to forestall breakdown of law and order.

The workers had alleged that the management of the university carried out illegal deduction of 7.5percent from their salaries after a similar deduction had been made from the wages which accrued to the university from the Federation Account.

The workers comprising the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Non Academic Staff Union, NASU, and the Senior Staff Association of Universities, SSANU, had in the past one year engaged the management of the university in face-off over the alleged double deduction.

Spokesman for the workers, Dr Ife Adewumi who also doubles as the University’s ASUU chairman, accused the management of denying the workers their right.

But the Vice Chancellor, Professor Michael Faborode had consistently denied the allegation of double deduction maintaining that relevant bodies petitioned by the workers had given the management a clean bill of health.
