Niger House okays budget

By Wole Mosadomi

MINNA — Niger State House of Assembly has passed the 2010 budget proposal into law and now awaits the assent of the state governor, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu.

Governor Aliyu last December presented a budget proposal of N111, 511, 493, 214.00 made up of N37, 107,334, 820.00 as recurrent expenditure and N74, 404,158, 394.00 as capital expenditure for deliberation.

However, after proper scrutiny and harmonizing of grey areas, the Finance and Appropriation Committee jerked it up by over N4 billion.

Chairman of the Finance and Appropriation Committee, Alhaji Saidu Ndako Idris, while presenting the committee’s report to the House yesterday said the deficit was expected to be bridged when the National Assembly passes its budget which is based on $60 per barrel against the $57 per barrel benchmark which the state budget is based.

He also said the e-payment  introduced by the state government in the state on salary was expected to generate additional saving for the state.

With this development, the budget has now been increased from its initial N111, 511, 493, 214.00 to N115, 935, 531,763.00.
