The Lagos State government will Monday begin the 7th round of the free State-wide Screening for Diabetes and Hypertension in all the 20 Local Government Areas of the State and 37 Local Community Development Areas respectively.
Announcing the exercise in Lagos, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris who explain the rationale behind the programme said it was in view of the danger the diseases pose to health and economic loss to both individuals and governments.
Idris who disclosed that no fewer than 82,425 people were screened at the last exercise explained that the week-long exercise would begin at 8: am to 5:00 pm daily and for Club sites on the same dates are 4: 000to 9: 00pm.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Detoun Agbe- Davis who called on Lagosians to come out en masse and take advantage of the programme also encouraged Local Government Chairmen to take over the ownership of the programme by organising their own hypertension/diabetes screening exercise within their LGA.
He further noted that in contemporary times, developing countries like Nigeria and indeed Lagos state are undergoing a major demographic and epidemiological transition, with significant increases in the burden of injuries and non -communicable diseases.
Regretting that the diseases are more expensive to treat, he stressed that these diseases are preventable if detected early.
Idris further explained that the programme was mainly to create awareness for the symptoms, signs and effects of un treated hypertension and diabetes amongst others.
