One person simply identified as Papa Oyekachi, was Sunday burnt to death and property whichÂ monetary value could not be immediately ascertained destroyed when an afternoon inferno gutted aÂ storey building situated at No 1, Cardoso street, Kirikiri town, Lagos State.
Vanguard gathered that the fire which completely razed the buildingÂ before it wasÂ curtailed from spreading to other houses by officials and men of the Nigerian Navy and fire service, was caused by cooking gas explosion ,
An eyewitness said, the fire started at about 3Â pm and lasted for an hour before the arrival of fire service men to put it out.
According to the eyewitness, the victim was sleepingÂ when the fire started
â€œI was working along the street when I saw the fire and I saw some of the tenants throwing their property out of the house. But the fire was spreading so fast and I heard the children of the deceased crying that their father was sleeping. We tried going in but we could not because the smoke was much and prevented us from seeing.

A fire service man who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that a man whose aged and real names could not be ascertained was found burnt in one of the apartment.
â€œyes we saw one man dead but we canâ€™t get him out now. we want the crowd to leave and also we are trying to locate his family. as for the cause of the fire I cant tell you because wen are still sweeping the entire area â€œ.
