Fertiliser racketeering rocks Ebonyi LCDA

By Dennis Agbo

ABAKALIKI—Following arguments on the legality or otherwise of development councils, the coordinator and Management Committee members of Onicha Development Centre in Ebonyi state are being accused of undermining their own development by engaging in sales of subsidized fertilizers meant for peasant farmers of the area.

Youths of Isuokoma community had petitioned Governor Martin Elechi, asking for the heads of Coordinator of Onicha Development Centre, Mr. Clement Nwachukwu and the Management Committee members over alleged gross misconducts, including fertilizer racketeering.

Though Mr. Nwachukwu denied the allegations against him, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Emmanuel Echiegu agreed that there was an established case of fertilizer shoddy deal in the Onicha LCDA by a committee he set up, but said he recovered about 28 bags of fertilizer from illegal dealers, adding that the seized bags of fertilizer were deposited at Onicha Divisional Police headquarters.

“In fact one of them is said to be a fertilizer dealer. The committee reported that it got about 100 bags and that the dealer was selling at N4, 200 instead of N2, 700,” Commissioner Echiegu revealed, adding that he intends to forward the report to the Governor and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters for disciplinary action against the Onicha Development Centre officials.
