Crisis rocks Uzo-Uwani LG

By Tony Edike

ENUGU—THE Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu state has been engulfed in crisis, following the removal of the leader of the legislative council, Mr. Leonard Maji, for alleged incompetence and corrupt practices among other offences.

Maji, who was impeached by two-third of the councilors and immediately replaced with Mr. Chikee Fredrick,  is said to be very close to the chairman of the local council, Mr. James Ademu, who had kicked against the impeachment, describing same as illegal.

In the notice of impeachment signed by fifteen councilors, Maji who was also suspended for five weeks, was accused of frustrating the sitting of the council since January this year, as the legislative arm sat only four times within the period,  which is against the provision of Sections 63 and 104 of the 1999 constitution, that states that the  members “shall sit for a period of not less than 181 days in a year.”

The aggrieved council members said in spite of the zero tolerance for corruption by the present administration in Enugu state, Maji had allegedly been an agent of corruption in the legislative council, noting that he (Maji) had been entrusted with N500,000 to pay N350,000 to Alwya Global for car security but had failed to account for the remaining N150,000 as demanded by them.

“We discovered that a lot is happening in the government that we are part of, as we were totally left in the dark.  We are strangers in our homeland.  The annoying part is that Mr Maji Leonard, after attending Enugu State Leaders’ Forum Meeting will not relate the outcome of the meeting to the councilors.

Instead, the councilors resort to calling leaders from other local government councils for information. Maji has in this act deformed all the councilors of Uzo-Uwani by starving us of information,” the councilors alleged.
